Woop Woop Winery Shiraz The Black Chook 2005 Tasting Notes
Ben Riggs is the winemaker at Australia's acclaimed Penny's Hill in the McLaren Vale. He works double duty producing the The Black Chook for Woop Woop Wines, sourcing Shiraz and Viognier from Langhorne Creek and the McClaren Vale to produce this gritty outback Shiraz cleverly balanced with Viognier to add stone fruit perfumes and velvet that cut back on the young tannins. Spicy and rich with dark cherries and plums, it's rough and rustic on one note but dampens with floral notes and creamy texture in the downbeat palate. It can probably lay down for a couple of years to temper the tannins. Good acidity matches up to pizza, pastas, grilled meats and poultry. And by the way, a Black Chook is Aussie for a chicken. Well, they call those wild outback dogs, Dingos so why not chickens Chooks?
