There are a number of wine rack plans that utilize all types of materials to store your favorite bottles of wine.
Before You Build
Before selecting plans for your wine rack, it is important to consider some of the basics of storing wine. Where will you place your wine rack? How many bottles do you plan to store? These are the questions to ask yourself before you begin.
The Basics of Storing Wine
There are a few tenants of storing wine that will help to protect your investment in the wine you purchase. If wine is to be stored for longer than a few weeks, then you need to keep the following in mind.
- Store wine on its side - This is important, because stored wine needs a moist cork. If the cork dries out, it shrinks and oxygen can get into your wine. Oxygen is the enemy of wine over the long term, because it can break down subtle flavors and even cause off flavors in the wine.
- Find a temperature controlled environment - Heat is the enemy of wine. To a lesser extent, so is cold. Large temperature fluctuations also can hurt your wine. Find a spot to place your wine rack where the temperature is steady and somewhat cool - about 55 to 60 degrees is ideal for wine storage. If you store wine above this temperature for the long term, it begins to break down the wine.
- Avoid areas where there is a lot of vibration - If you plan to place your wine rack in the laundry room, on top of the refrigerator or next to the garage door opener, you may want to rethink that. Vibration is another thing that can begin to break down wine over the long term.
- Wine likes humidity without the heat - This is why so many people store their wine in cellars - because basements tend to be fairly humid with a nice cool temperature.
