Villa Giada Barbera Suri Rosso Barbara D Asti 2004 Tasting Notes
The first thing I think of when I hear Piemonte is Barolo. Barolo is a big, spicy, highly tannic red wine that could make John Wayne back down. Barolos made with Nebbiolo grapes have big tannins that usually require a few years of taming. Ergo, they are not everyday drinking wines and the good ones are on the dear side. What do everyday people in Piemonte drink then?

The answer is Barbera d'Asti. They are juicy and simple, straightforward quasi-muscular red wines that when made well have the right balance of fruit and acidity to make them easy quaffers with Italian food. One has to be wary of Barbara, they can be lip-curling table wines or they can stun with their supple fruity velvet and vibrancy. Andrea Faccio is Villa Giada's winemaker, located high in the Piemonte hills midway between Asti and Alba. Faccio limits production in the vineyard, working to achieve a low-yield to high-quality wine. This unoaked Barbara is a concentrated ruby-red wine with loads of blackberry fruit aromas and flavors. There are bits of cherry and chocolate and shades of earthy underbrush that add complexity to the structure. It's a bright and easy quaffing red that satisfies. Nicely matches most Italian pastas, fowl, meats, mushrooms, or just a wedge of Taleggio.
