Varner Wines Foxglove Chardonnay 2005 Tasting Notes
Bob Varner of Varner Wines makes Foxglove Chardonnay. Edna Valley is an AOC in the Central Coast of California just south of San Luis Obispo. This Foxglove follows the style and demeanor of this region. The winters are mild and the summers get hot but are cooled by Pacific marine air and morning fog. For the price this Chardonnay has more complexity than one expects. There's a negligible trace of oak in this bright Chardonnay, just enough to consider but not enough to frown upon. The white wine leads with a vibrant note of crisp fruit and fills the mouth with Granny Apples and invigorating citrus. You'll find just the right amount of acidity to balance the fruit. One problem with many California Chardonnays is matching with food. This Foxglove works well with scallops, crab, fish, poultry, and light fare. Good value wine.
