Umberto Cesari Sangiovese di Romagna 2002 Tasting Notes
Umberto Cesari is located in the Emilia-Romagna D.O.C. and lies on the border of the more reputable and famous for vino D.O.C., Toscana. However, don't let the Romagna tag throw you for a loop and confuse this estate's Sangiovese with any of the regional fizzy Lambruscos. This Italian red drinks more like something from its neighbor to the west where Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, and Super Tuscans reign. Umberto Cesari and his wife, Giuliana, founded their estate in Castel San Pietra. They expanded their vineyards as well as their family, and it remains a family winery producing typical reds and whites of the region.

This 2002 Sangiovese di Romagna Riserva is made from vineyards around Castel San Pietra and neighboring Imola. The fruity red wine is made from 85 percent Sangiovese blended with 15 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. After fermentation, the wine is aged in oak for 24 months. Dark ruby red in color, there are standup aromas of red fruit, with floral and oak notes. The palate brightens with lively cherries and raspberries, some hints of thyme and tobacco, and follows with creamy vanilla. The finish is held together with some rustic tannins and a tang of acidity but flattens out quickly. This wine is definitely Italian and pairs well with roasted chicken, pizza, and pastas with tomato-based sauce.
