Siduri Winery Pinot Noir Pisoni Vineyard, Santa Lucia Highlands 2002 Tasting Notes

By reputation, Siduri is one of California’s top wineries for Pinot Noir. In fact, that’s all they do: make that temperamental high-maintenance wine that either drives oenophiles into paroxysms of gushing giddiness or sinks them into sulking, despairing funks of ennui. Fortunately, Siduri has a record that predominantly leads its imbibers to the former state rather than the latter. Their Pisoni Vineyard Pinot is made from the much-prized Pinot Noir grapes from the Pisoni Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands. This AVA is located in the hills above Salinas Valley and near Monterey. It gets both warming air from the valley with direct sunshine at higher elevations that is flipped with cooling air from the Pacific’s morning fog and afternoon breezes. It’s an emerging region known for Chardonnay but with special promise for Pinot Noir. Siduri’s 2002 Pisoni Vineyard Pinot is a good example from the Santa Lucia Highlands. It is dark garnet in the glass with lovely aromas of black fruit, chocolate, mocha with toasted oak, and spice. It starts off somewhat tight but begins to open with welcoming arms after a half hour or so. The mouth is rich and lush with wild berries, cherries, and black plum that continues with earth tones and leather. It has a solid, balanced structure with dexterous tannins, bright acidity, a smooth texture, and a lengthy finish with a defined redux of flavors. Lovely. Drinks well now, but it should improve over the next few years.
