About Santa Margherita
The Santa Margherita wine estate, located at the Villa Marzotto at Portogruaro in the Republic of Venice, Italy creates this versatile wine. Learn more about this favored wine and the company that launched it into popularity below.
Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio Wine Process
The Pinot Grigio grape is a copper colored grape, however, the wine itself is white. This is because of the way it is made. An enologist at Santa Margherita, Giorgio Mascarin, developed the process for making the delicious pinot grigio wine in 1961. The pinot grigio wine is made with a white wine vinification process. In doing so, the grape skins are separated from the must; otherwise, the wine would become rust-colored. The end result is a smooth tasting wine that is a perfect accompaniment to many foods or by itself, shared with friends. Its light, fresh taste has been compared to fresh apples or pears.
Serving Pinot GrigioWines
Santa Margherita currently produces three varieties of pinot grigio wine:
- Pinot Grigio Valdidige D.O.C. – Often served with white meats, seafood and soup.
- Impronta del FondatoreAlto Adige D.O.C. – Often served with fish, pasta, vegetables and chicken dishes. This wine has been aged in oak barrels and has a mellow flavor with vanilla notes.
- Acquavite d'Uva Pinot Grigio – Should be served on its own or with dark chocolate.
Pinot Grigio wine should be served chilled in tulip-shaped glasses. The serving temperature should be around 50 degrees Fahrenheit or 14 degrees Celsius.
The Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio wines are easy on the palate and the budget. They can be purchased for under $25 at wine shops and restaurants across the United States. It has remained as the top-selling imported wine from Italy and the top selling pinot grigio wine sold in United States restaurants since 1995, according to Wine & Spirits International.
