Murphy-Goode Winery is a winery owned and managed by three families that is located up in Sonoma County's Alexander Valley. Formed in 1985, the initial wines were Fumé Blanc and Chardonnay, two white wines that have been the mainstay at Murphy-Goode ever since.

Of the two, the Fumé Blanc probably gets more attention and justly so. For those wondering what grape Fumé Blanc is made from, it's simple, Sauvignon Blanc, and it's not much more than a marketing term, since it's just Sauvignon Blanc with a bit of oak aging. Robert Mondavi is credited with coining the smoky term and marketing this version of Sauvignon Blanc.
Over the years, Murphy-Goode has consistently produced excellent versions at an excellent value. Their 2003 Fumé Blanc from Alexander Valley shows a sprite nose of stone fruit, citrus, honeysuckle, fresh hay and a soft vibration of smoky oak. On the palate there's an easy transition from the lemon-tangerine tang, to figs, to soft grass and then a pleasant resolution in the finish, with traces of vanilla oak and faint buttery texture. Balanced texture that makes a nice aperitif or companion to fish, chicken or cheese. Good value.
