Meeker Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Four Kings Red Table Wine 2002 Tasting Notes
Meeker's Four Kings Red Table Wine leaves out a traditional Fifth King, Malbec. Although Malbec is missing, the remaining royalty of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot are all present and accounted for in this Bordeaux-style red wine. The 2002 Four Kings is rich and supple with a virtuous nose of black fruit, mocha, dried mushrooms, and vanilla oak notes. The blended red wine is rustic and earthy but inserts opulence and elegance in the same swirl of the glass. There's a multitude of flavors that come through, the mouth leads with ripe blackberries, plums, and cassis that almost reaches syrupy nectar but that falls back, held in check by smooth tannins. Then, the mid-palate asserts itself with leather, chocolate, and smoky oak to show a smug self-satisfaction. It finishes slowly with a slight malolactic buttery texture. Well-balanced, dexterous, slick, the Four Kings shows a solid backbone and finesse. It drinks well right now but can still improve if laid down for a few years.
