About Long Island Wineries and Vineyards

With its first winery opening its doors in 1973, Long Island is considered one of the youngest wine growing regions in New York. Iit is becoming an increasingly popular destination for wine lovers. So much so, it is considered the fastest growing wine region is the state. Here are some more stats on the wine industry in Long Island:

  • It is home to three wine growing regions, called American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) – The main AVA, Long Island and two sub regions, The Hamptons and The North Fork.
  • Popular wine destination – Long Island welcomes over one million visitors annually.
  • 500,000 cases of wine come out of Long Island every year.
  • Growth – When the first winery was established in 1973, there were only 17 acres of grapes planted. Now, there are over 3,000 acres of grapes planted in Long Island.

Before you begin planning your Long Island wine tour, you want to make sure that the winery or vineyard is open and gives tours. Not all wineries in the area are open to the public, which is why it's a great idea to book your tour through a travel agency or a company specializing in wine tours in the area. Of course, before you book your trip, you are going to want to decide which part of Long Island wine country you want to see.

Here is a little more information about the three AVAs on Long Island.

The Hamptons/South Fork

This area of Long Island wine country is also referred as The Hamptons/South Fork. The Hamptons are, of course, where the rich, famous and those that consider themselves the "social elite" like to go for vacations. If this is where you want to go, expect high prices…everywhere. On the flip side, maybe you'll have a celebrity spotting or two. Here is a list of wineries and vineyards in the Hamptons:

  • Wollfer Estate Vineyard - This vineyard offers group tours of the estate by appointment only, so be sure to call ahead.
  • Channing Daughters Winery – If you are a member of the Channing Daughters Winery wine club, tastings are free. Otherwise, they cost around six dollars a person. Cell phones and dogs are not welcome in the tasting rooms. So turn your cell phones off and unfortunately, you will have to leave Rover at home.
  • Duck Walk Vineyards - Located in Southampton, New York, this vineyard offers free tours of the estate from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Tastings cost around four dollars per person.

The North Fork

If you want a bit of a more laid back, country charm type atmosphere, then a wine tour of the North Fork may be just what you are looking for. Here are a few wineries located in the North Fork:

  • Clovis Point Vineyards – This boutique winery offers tours by appointment only and tastings year round.
  • Diliberto Winery – This winery is designed to look like an authentic Italian Piazza and the designers did an absolutely gorgeous job. Tours and tastings are available by appointment only.
  • Pugliese Vineyards – Make an appointment to tour the estate of this breathtaking winery. The vineyard store offers a free personalization with any wine bottle purchase. Large tour groups are welcome.
