La Bastide Saint Dominique Grenache Secrets de Pignan 2003 Tasting Notes
This is not an ordinary Châteauneuf-du-Pape. To begin with the Vieilles Vignes indicates that the lush and jammy red wine is made from old vines dating back to 1920. By Châteauneuf-du-Pape rules, wines from this region can only use eight grape varietals to be legitimate, with Grenache being the cornerstone grape. However, the Bonnet family's La Bastide Saint Dominique uses 100 percent Grenache in its 2003 Secrets de Pignan.

To top that off, the wine doesn't spend time in or near any oak barrels. The result is a rich dimensioned red wine with a resonating Southern Rhône perfume of violets and red cherries. Flavorful with raspberries and cherries, Pignan's secrets are revealed with evolving flavors of minerals and wildflowers that creates a balanced red with an elegant jammy texture and just the right amount of acidity. Ready to drink but will improve with aging if one can wait. Bon.
