Jewel Collection "Firma" Red Table Wine 2003 Tasting Notes:
Not a bad wine when factoring the price into the equation...
"Firma" is the Jewel Collection’s attempt at an Italian varietal blend with Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Petite Sirah. I don’t usually like Californian versions of typically Italian grapes but this wasn’t bad as it managed to have some acidity that balanced out the reasonably ripe fruit. Probably wisely the winemakers did not try to replicate an Italian recipe, instead throwing in some Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah along with the Italian grapes. This seems to work alright and the wine went well with pasta in tomato sauce. I’ve never been completely disappointed with the Jewel Collection wines, but have never been really thrilled either. This is a safe choice if you’re stuck in a gas station or supermarket.
