Inexpensive Personalized Wine Labels

From LoveToKnow Wine

There is nothing like inexpensive, personalized wine labels to turn a good bottle of wine into a great gift.

Special Labels Make Special Occasions

If you make your own wine you may already have a special label that you have developed to be the crowning touch on your special wine creation. A personalized wine label gives you the chance to announce that you created the wine and to add a special flare to the look of the wine bottle such as a specially-designed logo, a fun name for the wine or a distinctive slogan. Your special wine, packaged with your equally special label, makes your creation even more enjoyable to use or give as a gift.

The Occasion Creates the Design

You don't have to make your own wine to enjoy the fun of adding a special label. Many wine lovers are enjoying replacing a wine bottle's original label with inexpensive, personalized wine labels which they designed themselves. People use these custom-looking wine offerings in a variety of ways including:

  • Personalized gifts for a specific occasion. For example:
    • Joe's 50th Birthday
    • Tom and Mary Nelson's Wedding
    • John and Sally's 50th Anniversary
    • Bill's Retirement
  • Thank you gifts to family and friends
  • Wine served at a wedding, party or family event
  • Centerpiece of a gift basket
  • Holiday gifts

Get Creative

Don't feel that your personalized label has to look just like a label on a commercial bottle of wine. This is your chance to get creative. For example:

  • Bottle size - A personalized wine label can be used on a standard, 750ml bottle of wine as well as on half bottles (375ml) or mini bottles. The customized labels on smaller bottles make particularly unique party favors, particularly if the label has the date and reason for the party.
  • Label design – The personalization options are just about endless. Consider adding photos, children's art, drawings or maps in addition to text.
  • Label text – The style of text can be as varied as the words. Computer fonts, handwriting and kid's writing can all add to the customized look of your label. As you plan what words you are going to add, consider adding:
    • Type of wine or beverage in the bottle - Remember, you can't see the original label anymore, so you need to add the varietal and vintage information to your label so the recipients knows what's in the bottle.
    • Your name – Johnson Family Winery or Bob's Red Vino are both examples of unique ways to identify who customized the bottle.
    • The occasion and date – These are important to add if the bottle is to be a party favor.

Finding Inexpensive Personalized Wine Labels

A personalized wine label does not have to look like it just rolled off the printing press. In fact, many of the most unique wine labels are those made from original art and copied at your neighborhood copy store. The key to making a striking personalized wine label is the design and text you put on the label - whether you decide to create a hand drawn label, use your computer or order them from a printer.

Hand Drawn

A personalized label can be hand drawn on paper, duplicated on a color copier, cut to size and glued onto the bottles. To simplify the process, consider drawing the label on a sheet of precut labels that can then be copied on a color copier – no cutting or gluing required.

Computer-generated

A computer can simplify the process. There is free wine label software available that can help you create a professional looking label using a design template you can select from the software. Some programs also let you add your own images. Once you have created your label, you can print the labels on your color printer or take one down to your local copy store and have it color-copied on sheets of paper or precut labels.

Professionally-printed

Several online printers have created assortments of wine label designs with areas for you to add your customized text. This is an easy way to get professional-looking labels by the sheet for about $1 a label. You can purchase a few labels (ten is often the minimum) or enough to label a bottle for every one at a large corporate gathering. Some of the printers include:

A personalized wine label is a fun way to customize a wine bottle to fit the occasion. The label can be easily removed for display with a wine label remover. For other occasions when you want a personalized touch, you may also want to consider personalized wine bottles.
