This one's a bit confusing. Bonny Doon went over to Italy and cut some deal to buy somebody's crop. Who actually makes it, Bonny Doon or an anonymous Italian, is not clear. The packaging claims that Bonny Doon has triumphed in taming the often thin, tannic Montepulciano grape and succeeded in making a slick label that can sell for almost double what the average Montepulciano D'Abruzzo commands here in the States. This is not a bad wine but it lacks the bright, easy fruit that Montepulciano can offer. There are many harsh examples available, but with some investigation the consumer can find a $6 Montepulciano D'Abruzzo that will provide a great deal of pleasure. This wine at nearly twice the price is not one of them. The label is very well done, though.
