Domaine Santa Duc Grenache Les Buissons 2001 Tasting Notes
Yves Gras is the winemaker from Domaine Santa Duc, one of the top producers in the Rhône's Gigondas, and he is applying his ample talents to his Côtes-du-Rhône Villages—Cairanne wines as well. Cairanne is one of the sixteen villages in the Côtes-du-Rhône Villages designation and also one of the best, with wines that show depth, dark fruit, lively spice, and good tannins for aging. Mostly Grenache blended with Syrah and Mourvèdre, this Les Buissons is a dark ruby red with a showy nose of black fruit, spiciness, oaky vanilla, and enlivening earthy notes. The palate is full-bodied with ripe blackberries, plums, and currants that move along with underlying pepper, tobacco, light vanilla, and a smooth velvet texture. Good tannins for balance and bright acidity make this a good friend for food. Best bets would be for roasted or grilled meats and poultry, and a glass of Les Buissons would upgrade a basic burger to the deluxe class.
