Domaine De Gournier Grenache Costieres de Nimes 2005 Tasting Notes
Grenache is a robust grape doesn't wilt under the hot Mediterranean sun, doesn't parch from dry air, and its sturdy vines don't break against a stiff wind. It's known in Spain as Garnacha where it originated. It produces fruity, juicy, and low tannin wines. In the South Rhone region it is generally blended with Syrah, Cinsault, Mourvedre, and other varietals to add some missing character components. Domaine De Gournier is located in the Costieres de Nimes where they hand make several red and white varietals on their small estate. This Grenache Noir 2003 is a Vin de Pays Des Cévennes and makes for a good value table wine. It's rustic in nature with dark fruit aromas and a background of earthiness, herbs, and toasted oak. It has solid blackberry fruit in the mouth coupled with spicy pepper. The tannins ring too loud and jar the balance. Then again, that's to be expected at the sub-$10 price. Still, the wine works just fine as a table wine and goes with simple burger or a sassy pizza.
