Chateau St. Jean Malbec St. Jean Estate 2002 Tasting Notes
When I think of Malbec, I usually think of something from Mendoza, Argentina, perhaps some luscious bottle of dark red from Bodegas Catena. Or I think of one of the traditional grapes blended as part of a fine Bordeaux. What I don't think of is a something American. True, Malbec is grown in Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley, but it's usually blended a la Bordelaise as part of a Meritage concoction.

With a modicum of expectation I uncorked this 2002 Chateau St. Jean Malbec and was given a lift. Dark and lush, there were big aromas of black cherries, leather, whiffs of flowers, and sturdy oak. This was thick and large on the palate but held some nuance. Intense with concentrated black fruit and ample tannins. However, the big red tightens down when you want it to open up and bloom. Still, good fruit and structure and it should age well for another three to five years.
