Did you ever get so confused when reading a wine's review components that you find yourself simply picking a bottle of wine by which one has the prettiest or coolest label? Don't be ashamed to admit it…you're not the only one who has used this method of picking a bottle of wine.

Confusing Wine Review Components

A Cab is frequently a Big wine.

For some people, trying to understand the labels on wine bottles or the wine reviews in magazines is just to bewildering. If you're not a regular wine drinker and have ever read a review describing a wine as "chewy" you may have thought to yourself "Now, why would I ever want to drink that?" In the language of wine, chewy is actually good thing.

Here are some other commonly used terms you'll learn about in Wine Review Components:

  • Big – A very commonly used term when describing red wines such as Cabernet or Bordeaux.
  • Lean – Not always a good thing when it comes to wine.
  • Masculine – Doesn't mean macho or manly.
  • Flabby – Never a good characteristic for any type of wine.

Choose with Confidence

Once you get to know the language of wine, the reviews and bottle labels won't seem so confusing. Plus, you'll learn the terms used to describe the wine you like, for instance, if you're a fan of Cabs and Bordeauxs, then you're definitely a fan of big wines. If you love a great glass of Australian Shiraz, then you're probably a fan of peppery wines. See how easy that is?
