Italy is one of the largest wine producing countries in the world. The small country (approximately the size of California), amazingly produces nearly 20% of the wine in the entire world.
Italian Wine Regions
Being one of the largest wine producing countries in the world, the wine producing regions in Italy are vast:
- Northeast – This region is known for its Valpolicella, Soave and Prosecco.
- Northwest – Home to the famous Piedmont region which produces Italy's finest Barolo's. This region is also known for it's great Dolcetto, Barbaresco and Barbera.
- Central – Tuscany, Umbria and Abruzzo are among the six regions that make up this wine producing area.
- Southern – This region includes Apulia and Campania, among others.
Beyond Chianti
Chianti is, of course, one of the most popular and important wines to come out of Italy. Chianti vintners have worked hard for years to shake the undeserved reputation of one of their premiere wines as being thin, uninteresting and of poor quality. Their hard work is definitely paying off as Chianti remains a very popular wine around the world. But, Italy has so much more to offer beyond Chianti, like:
- Organic reds – Believe it or not, many wineries are organic but don't even know it. Check out a few from Italy.
- Sangiovese – One of the top grapes in Italy and used to produce so many wonderful red blends from Italy.
- Montepulciano – Not as famous as many of its Italian counterparts. Expand your Italian wine horizons and give a bottle of Montepulciano a try.
- Barbera – Which is better, Barbera d' Asti or Barbera d' Alba? Why not give them both a try?
