Bonny Doon Vineyard Syrah-Le Pousseur Central Coast 2004 Tasting Notes
Bonny Doon's Randall Grahm is, if nothing else, a breath of whimsical air in a sometimes stale and stuffy environment in need of a little literary breeze. Just check out any label on a Bonny Doon wine and see that they love to have fun with their wine, but that doesn't limit their zeal and commitment to produce the best they can. Bonny Doon has long been at the vanguard for Rhône varietals in California.

In fact, Le Pousseur is French for the Pusher and Bonny Doon has been pushing brilliant and tasty Rhône style wines since Randall began making wine in the late 1980s. Le Pousseur is predominantly Syrah with bits of Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Cabernet Franc. The wine opens quickly with an opulent perfume of ripe cherry fruit, a floral bouquet and earthy brambles. The palate is wild and racy with lush cherries and cassis, white pepper, roasted meat and smoke. There's a soft and supple character that finishes with a silky texture and creates a sense of kinship with the Rhône's Châteauneuf-du-Pape. This is a very good thing. Alas, the empty bottle left me licking my lips and craving for more, Le Pousseur has got me hooked. Damn you, Randall Grahm.
