Bodegas y Vinedos del Jalon Grenache Vina Alarba 2004 Tasting Notes
2004 Bodegas y Vinedos del Jalon, Calatayud Old Vines Grenache, Vina Alarba
Calatayud is a relatively obscure appellation (albeit gaining more recognition recently for its New World style reds) located in the Aragon region in northeast Spain. The high elevation and dry, warm weather create a friendly environment for Garnacha, or in this case for marketing purposes, Grenache.
Glowing ultra purple in color, the wine displays a nose of kirsch, plum and jammy raspberries. Full-bodied offering sweet ripe tannins, the palate reflects plum, raspberries, cherries, pepper spice and black licorice. Drinking well now, the wine could use 6 months or a year to settle down. Paired with Seared Rare Lamb Shoulder Steak with Garnacha demi-glaze and a side of dirty rice.
