Bodega Catena Zapata Alamos Malbec 2004 Tasting Notes
Bodega Catena Zapata is one of the high profile wineries in Argentina, and the Catena family has been making wine in Mendoza for over 100 years. Like many of this country's wineries, their founders and heritage immigrated here from Italy. Nicolás Catena took over the family business in 1963. Since then he has put the winery on a course to expand and modernize their vineyards and winery. He has become a driving force behind the growth in Argentina's wine industry and rising reputation. Alamos is their bodega's high value brand of wine and includes several red and white varietals. But, Malbec is synonymous with Argentina wine and the Alamos Malbec has been consistently good year after year. The 2004 vintage is worth the price of admission at $10. The nose opens with a burst of black cherry fruit, a light floral bouquet, earthiness, and toasted oak bits. The mouth starts slightly chewy but softens with ripe cherry and cassis flavors that take a side step with hints of chocolate and tar. It has a nice finish that lingers with solid fruit flavors, smooth tannins, and a tang of acidity. You can't go wrong for the price, and the solid red goes well with grilled food and hearty fare.
